Unichip 367C Rev. 1.0 UNI-386WB Am386 DX-40 Cache 386 Motherboard

Unichip UNI-386WB Motherboard mit onboard Am386 DX-40 CPU, IIT 4C87-40 FPU, 8x 4MB Simm Speicher und 128KB Cache.

Das kleine Unichip-Motherboard im Format „1/2 Mini-AT“ zeigt stellvertretend für andere Fabrikate, wie die späten Bestsellerboards der 386er-Ära aussahen. Es waren Boards wie dieses, die den Computer auch in Deutschland für die Masse bezahlbar machten. Das Motto der Hersteller war ganz einfach: Alle gängigen Features auf kleinstmöglichem Platz vereinen und somit kostengünstiger sein als die 486er-Konkurrenz. So wurde der Platz auf der 4-Layer-Platine sehr effizient ausgenutzt, kaum ein Quadratzentimeter blieb ungenutzt. Trotzdem bietet es 8x 30pin. Simm-Speicherplätze, von denen jeweils 4 als eine Speicherbank angesprochen werden, 6 Steckkartenslots, davon 5x 16-Bit ISA und sogar bis zu 128KB Cache Speicher.

Hergestellt wurde dieses Board 1993, also in jenem Zeitalter, als die Nachfolgeneration „486“ bereits populär war. Eine Zeit, in der sich der preisbewußte Konsument einen SX-25 oder SX-33 Prozessor zusammen mit 2-4MB Arbeitsspeicher leistete. In etwa diesem Leistungsspektrum liegt auch die hier vorgestellte Platine mit AMD 386DX-40 Prozessor, der hier, anders als ein 486SX, zusätzlich durch einen (stark aufpreispflichtigen) numerischen Prozessor für Fließkommaberechnungen in Form des IIT 4C87DLC-40 unterstützt wurde. Die Technik der 386er-Architektur war damals sehr ausgereift und die Miniboards konnten wesentlich kostengünstiger produziert werden als ein vergleichbares Board für 486er. Ähnlich verhält es sich mit dem Prozessor, der Am386 war durch das Fehlen des L1 Caches und das insgesamt einfachere Design höher integrierbar und damit deutlich günstiger als ein 486er herzustellen, einzig der optionale Koprozessor war selbst 1993 noch ein Kostenfaktor, der den Gesamtpreis eines solchen Systems fast in die Region der Einsteiger-486er ansteigen ließ. Allerdings gab es damals für den Heimbereich kaum Anwendungen, die effektiven Nutzen aus dem Koprozessor zogen, die populären DOS-Spiele dieser Zeit liefen und laufen genau so schnell ohne. Unterm Strich stimmte das Preis/Leistungsverhältnis, denn für weniger Geld konnte der 386DX-40 insbesondere durch den hohen Bustakt von 40MHz und den dadurch schneller angebundenen Speicher die Performance der 486SX-Modelle meist erreichen, in einigen Anwendungen sogar leicht überbieten.

Das Unichip 386-WB Motherboard hat erfreulicherweise auch einen externen Batterie-Anschluß und kann so mit einem herkömmlichen Batterypack als CMOS-Puffer betrieben werden.

    Hallo :)! Ich habe mir dieses wunderbare board vor kurzem in Bestzustand gekauft. Bei meinem ist auch der PGA132-Sockel nicht eingelötet. Dies möchte ich aber ändern um einen 486DLC oder 486SXL nachzurüsten. Leider fi de ich das Manual zu diesem Board nirgends. Ich habe in den Kommentaren gelesen, dass es hier mal zur Verfügung stand. Wäre es möglich das Manual i. PDF-Fornat nochnals bereitzustellen? Besten Dank! 🙂

      Hi David,

      I think the manual is hard to get. But if you are looking for the jumper settings – just try a google search for the unichip 367c. You will find some information at (for example) „rainbow-software“, which is a hoster of the th99 library. The DataExpert 367C you will find there is exactly the same mentioned here.

    Hi,
    das ist ja ein nettes kleines Board. Ich habe eine Frage zum Coprozessor, das ist ja ein 487 und der Prozessor ist ein 386. Arbeiten die beide problemlos zusammen oder gibt es da komplikationen?

      Hallo Stephan,
      die CPU arbeitet problemlos mit der 4C87 FPU zusammen.
      Die FPU ist aber kein 487er, denn der 487er war ein 486DX-Prozessor mit Overdrive-Pin, der in einem Nachbarsockel auf 486SX-Boards gesteckt wurde um diesen komplett zu deaktivieren. Der gezeigte 4C87 Prozessor ist ein speziell für den Betrieb mit den TI/Cyrix 486DLC Prozessoren (für den 132-pin 386er Sockel) erweiterter numerischer Koprozessor, der aber auch den Befehlssatz des 387ers beherrscht, also als Ergänzung zum 386DX-Prozessor eingesetzt werden kann. Daher gibt es auch keine Komplikationen.
